28TH STREET FAMILY LIFE CENTER
 
 
The 28th Street Family Life Center operates in a facility independent of the Historic Motor City Missionary Baptist Church.
 
The 28th Street Family Life Center is a place that will provide learning opportunities and services that foster community in the 28th Street/Buchanan/Rich neighborhood.  This is one of the most diverse and economically challenged areas within the City of Detroit.  Our purpose is to provide quality and compassionate services for the survival, education, health, welfare and independence of the children, adults and senior citizens which reside within the area of the Center.  It is the goal of the Center to reach its community by providing:
 
TUTORIAL PROGRAMS
 
  • The creation a of community learning center that will provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools.
 
  • Help students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math with an after school tutoring program for children ages 7 through 17;
 
  • Offer a Reading Recovery class for students who are having problems reading and for adults who do not know how to read;
 
  • A computer lab, with training classes for the community;
 
  • Offer students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and offer literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.
 
ATHLETIC PROGRAMS
 
  • Offer a sports program for the youth with visits from local sports personalities.
 
PARENTING PROGRAMS
 
  • Provide parenting skills classes to parents within the community of all ages.
 
  • Provide referral for pre-natal care and post-delivery follow up for mother and infant.
 
 
COMMUNITY OUTREACH SERVICES
 
  • Offer outreach and referral services for drug and alcohol addicted residents within the community to appropriate treatment facilities;
 
  • Provide counseling and referral services for newly released prisoners to enable them to adjust to society, obtain employment and avoid re-incarceration;
 
  • An annual health fair will be hosted for the community with professionals to monitor blood pressure levels, blood sugar levels, dental examinations, and free immunizations for school-aged children;
 
  • Provide referral for rental assistance, food assistance, emergency shelter assistance for those in need; and
 
  • Host Annual Community Christmas Dinner.
 
SENIOR CITIZEN SERVICES
 
  • Habitat for Humanity in assisting elderly, handicapped and special needs persons with simple home repairs, as well as those who are in need of small home repairs in general;
 
  • Free Lunch program for individuals within the community;
 
  • Annual Thanksgiving Dinner program for the community at-large who are without family and/or food; Distribution of baskets to needy families
 
  • Computer Literacy
 
  • Senior Youth Interaction Program
 
OTHER SERVICES
 
  • Adopt-A-Family Program:  Each holiday, the Center will adopt families to provide food, clothing, toys for tots, and other assistance
 
  • Bi-annual Clothing and Food Drives: to be distributed to the Community residents and those in need
 
  • Annual Community Clean-up Project.
 
  • Host Educated Choices Sessions for Youth ages 12 - 18 years of age.
